How Germicidal UV Light Works

You probably know that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) is to blame for your painful sunburn. But were you aware that another variety of ultraviolet light can be useful for keeping your residence’s air clean?

The sun gives off two types of damaging UV rays, UVA and UVB. These harmful rays can result in sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other types of premature aging.

There’s another type of UV light, referred to as UVC. While full exposure to this ultraviolet light isn’t good for your skin or eyes, it can safely be utilized to clean air, water and some surfaces.

Select Comfort System Heating & Air Conditioning uses this light in several of our solutions to enhance air filtration in West Valley City houses.

Applications for Ultraviolet Light

This precise wavelength is classified as “germicidal” as it eradicates the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens travel through this light, they eventually perish as they can’t multiply.

This makes UVC light a mighty substitute to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is employed in lots of disinfection procedures, including medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also used to clean drinking water and other liquids created in food processing.

It’s becoming more popular to purify air in homes in West Valley City. That’s since it can also wipe out frequent indoor contaminants including mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an extra advantage for family members who suffer from seasonal allergies or asthma.

Having Germicidal UV Light in Your House

We install a germicidal UV light in your HVAC system’s ductwork. Because the light is installed in the ductwork, it makes it compatible with most heating and cooling units. This also keeps its light securely confined while giving powerful cleaning for your residence’s air.

Dirty air is freshened in a two-step process, first flowing through your air filter and then the UV light in advance of flowing throughout your home. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t on, these lights still run to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort unit clean.

This whole-house product is greater than a portable air purifier, which is limited to cleaning the air in a single room. Portable air purifiers also can’t purify your ductwork or the interior of your HVAC system. A clean HVAC system is often a more efficient one that could even run longer. And, some portable air purifiers are notorious for producing ozone.

When thinking over adding a germicidal lamp to your home, it’s critical to select one that doesn’t produce ozone. While ozone is good at eradicating odors and chemicals, it may also irritate your lungs and create other respiratory issues.
