Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, the majority of them can be traced back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
